Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization

Now that your website is up and running for some time and you have put your favorite images and content on the website but you notice that visitors are not coming to your site. The chances are that your website is not indexed in any of the major search engines. So you need to make sure that your site is indexed in some of major search engines so that the content from your site should appear in search results and people can come to your site.

But why the visibility of your website on search engines is so important? Because according to a recent survey, 50% of all site visitors on average reach to a site through search Engine. So let’s see how you can find out if your website is indexed in different search engine sites.

Google

Let’s start with the leader in search i.e. Google. If you find to quickly find out that a website is indexed in Google or not then you can simple type the following at the google site or in the google toolbar

site: domain.com

Please don’t type the www prefix, just the domain name. For example, you can try this with onlinefungags.com. You would search for this as

site:onlinefungags.com

Google will display a listing of pages that it has found on your website and on the top you might see like “Results 1 -10 of 7000 from onlinefungags.com”. This is a quick way to know how many pages Google has indexed from your website.

Search engines often store web pages in their cache. A cache is a temporary storage area where a copy of something is stored. So if you want to see what Google has cached for a page in the index then you can type the following against the your website url in google site or toolbar

cache:http://yourdomain.com/page.htm

Replace yourdomain.com with your domain name and page.htm with your page.

Yahoo and MSN

Now you have the added benefit that syntax used for Google also works on Yahoo and MSN.

Yahoo Directory.

You can also check the Yahoo Directory if your website is listed there. You can check this by following the instructions given below.

  1. Type dir.yahoo.com in your browser address bar.
  2. Type your website’s domain name in the search text box.
  3. Make sure that the directory option button is selected and then click Search Button.

You will have to pay yahoo to get your website listed in their directory.

Open Directory Project

There is one widely used Open Search engine directory where you may register and get your website listed for free. It is www.dmoz.org (Open Directory Project). You should check on this directory website whether your website is listed here or not.

Above are some minimal steps to make sure that your website is indexed and visible to search engines. If your website is not indexed in any major search engines then there is some serious problem with the content and structure of your website.
